Opening a Bank Account in South Africa as a Foreigner: Documents and Banks Compared

What a Chinese passport holder needs to open a South African bank account: FICA documents, resident vs non-resident accounts, the main banks and the Chinese bank branches.

Last checked:

To open a bank account in South Africa as a foreigner you normally need a valid passport, a valid visa or permit and proof of address no older than three months, plus proof of income for some features. All five big retail banks (Capitec, FNB, Standard Bank, Absa and Nedbank) bank foreigners; Bank of China, China Construction Bank and Bank of Communications have Johannesburg branches, but they focus on corporate and cross-border business.

Resident or non-resident account?

South African banks separate “resident” and “non-resident” accounts for exchange control purposes. If you live in South Africa on a work, business or study visa, you can usually open an ordinary personal account (your exchange control status is still that of a foreign national). If you live abroad and only invest or buy property here, you will usually need a non-resident account. Nedbank, for example, offers non-resident accounts and foreign currency accounts; a foreign currency account normally requires you to hold a rand current or savings account with the same bank first.

Whether a visitor’s (tourist) visa holder can open an account, and with which features, varies by bank. Call or visit a branch to check first.

Documents you need (FICA)

The Financial Intelligence Centre Act (FICA) requires banks to verify your identity and address. Foreigners usually need:

  • a valid passport (your original Chinese passport);
  • a valid visa or permit: the visa in your passport or the permit issued by Home Affairs. When it is close to expiry the bank may restrict your account, so bring the renewed visa in as soon as you have it;
  • proof of address no older than three months: a utility bill, phone account, municipal rates invoice, retail account statement or short-term insurance policy. If you have just arrived, ask whether the bank accepts your lease plus a letter from your landlord;
  • proof of income (depending on bank and features): employer’s letter, employment contract, recent payslip or bank statement;
  • a South African mobile number for app and online banking codes. Get a SIM card and complete RICA first: see SIM cards and RICA.

At Capitec, for example, a foreigner can apply at a branch with a passport and valid visa. Proof of income is optional at opening, but international payments, international and online card payments and forex stay locked until you provide it. Work visa holders can use an employer’s letter, contract, payslip or bank statement. Permanent residents do not need proof of income.

The main banks compared

Bank Strengths Good for
Capitec Low monthly fee, many branches, easy app, clear process for foreigners Newcomers, everyday banking
FNB Full-featured app and online banking, non-resident and foreign currency products Heavy online users, forex needs
Standard Bank ICBC owns about 20%; strong in cross-border and business banking Traders and business owners dealing with China
Absa Wide branch network, full personal and business range General needs
Nedbank Non-resident, embassy and foreign currency accounts Non-residents, foreign currency
Bank of China, China Construction Bank, Bank of Communications (Johannesburg branches) All in Sandton; Chinese-speaking staff; focus on corporate, trade settlement and RMB business Chinese companies and traders; ask first about personal accounts

ICBC has no retail branch in South Africa: it runs a representative office in Cape Town and works through its stake in Standard Bank. Bank of China Johannesburg lists personal deposit, remittance and exchange services on its website, but call the branch to confirm its conditions for personal accounts. Monthly fees and bundles change often; as of October 2026, check each bank’s website.

Step by step

  1. Choose a bank and read its “foreign national” or “non-resident” page to confirm your visa type qualifies.
  2. Take your original documents to a branch (most banks require foreigners to open in person).
  3. Staff capture your details, photo and signature; some banks issue a debit card the same day.
  4. Download the app and activate it with your local number.
  5. If you need to pay abroad, submit proof of income and ask for international payments to be enabled.

With complete documents one branch visit is usually enough. Non-resident and business accounts take longer.

Common problems and tips

  • Expired visa, frozen account: many people forget to update the bank after renewing. Take your new visa in straight away.
  • Large cash deposits are questioned: if your business takes cash, keep invoices, supplier receipts and sales records for the bank’s due diligence checks.
  • Never lend your account: receiving money for others can drag you into a money-laundering investigation and get the account frozen.
  • Tax status: the bank may ask for your tax residence and tax number; see South African income tax and tax residence.
  • Still sorting out your visa? Start with South African work visas.

Your bank statements also show how you spend. Provincially licensed sports betting, land-based casinos and the National Lottery are legal in South Africa, but online casino games (slots, roulette, live dealer and so on) are illegal. Paying such sites can trigger the bank’s fraud and compliance checks and get your account restricted, and your money has no protection. For what is and is not legal, see our gambling section.

FAQ

What if I have no proof of address yet?

Ask whether the bank accepts your lease or a letter from your landlord or employer. Requirements differ; some banks also accept a retail account statement or insurance policy.

Can I open an account on a tourist visa?

Not always. Banks usually want a valid visa or permit showing legal stay; whether a visitor’s visa is accepted is up to each bank, so ask first.

Can I send money to China straight after opening?

Most banks first need international payments enabled and proof of income, and you must state the reason for each payment. See Sending money between South Africa and China.

Should individuals bank with the Chinese banks?

The Johannesburg branches of Bank of China, CCB and Bank of Communications focus on companies and trade. Contact them directly about personal accounts; for daily life, open an account with a local retail bank first.
