How to choose

For wholesale and import-export, or easy access to Chinese food and groceries, Johannesburg is the obvious choice. If you work or study at an embassy, a government department or a university, Pretoria suits better. If you love the sea and a mild climate, look at Cape Town or Durban, but Cape Town costs more. Gqeberha and Bloemfontein are smaller and slower-paced, and suit people with a job or business there.

Knowing which Chinese mission serves your address matters. Gauteng south of Midrand and the Free State go to the Johannesburg Consulate-General, and north of Midrand to the Embassy. The Western, Eastern and Northern Cape go to the Cape Town Consulate-General, and KwaZulu-Natal to the Durban Consulate-General. See Chinese embassy and consulates. New to South Africa?
