Holders of ordinary mainland Chinese passports cannot enter South Africa visa-free or get a visa on arrival. Before you fly you need either a South African visa or an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). The ETA is applied for online at eta.dha.gov.za and, as of October 2026, carries a R500 electronic processing fee. The official target is a decision within 24 hours, but it only covers tourism and business visits of up to 90 days through designated airports, and it never allows you to work.

What the ETA is and whether Chinese passports qualify
The ETA is the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) online authorisation system. It replaces paper applications at a visa centre with facial biometrics and automated risk checks. China was one of the first pilot countries. The system opened to G20 delegations in October 2025, and from 12 February 2026 ordinary passport holders from China, India, Indonesia and Mexico could apply online for tourism or business. Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber formally launched the full platform on 12 August 2026.
In July 2026 the Chinese Embassy in South Africa reminded Chinese citizens that they must hold a visa or ETA before entry, and that claims of “no visa needed” or “get it on arrival” are misleading. Home Affairs also states that South Africa does not issue visas at ports of entry.

If you plan to cross into South Africa by land from Zimbabwe or Mozambique, or your route does not arrive at one of those airports, use the traditional route described in our South Africa tourist visa guide.
How to apply
- Use the official site only: eta.dha.gov.za, on the government domain dha.gov.za. Many look-alike sites in search results add large service charges.
- Enter personal and passport details exactly as printed in your passport (pinyin spelling, place of birth, place of issue).
- Upload a photo and complete the face capture. Your face becomes the biometric key that is checked when you land.
- Add your itinerary: arrival date, arrival airport, address in South Africa (hotel or host) and purpose of visit.
- Pay online. As of October 2026 the fee regulations under the Immigration Act set the ETA electronic processing fee at R500 (roughly RMB 200).
- Wait for the decision. Approved ETAs arrive by email and can be stored on your phone. Carrying a printed copy is a sensible backup.
Documents to have ready
- Ordinary Chinese passport valid for at least 30 days after your planned departure, with blank pages;
- A clear passport-style photo and a phone or computer camera for the face capture;
- Return or onward flight booking, and a hotel booking or your host’s address;
- Proof of funds such as bank statements, which border officials may ask to see;
- A yellow fever vaccination certificate if your trip passes through a yellow fever area (for example a stopover in Ethiopia or Kenya).
Length of stay, extensions and what you cannot do
Each entry allows a stay of up to 90 days, as shown on your authorisation and entry stamp. If you need more time, you can apply through the ETA system for one extension of up to 90 days. Submit it well before your stay expires. Neither the ETA nor a visitor visa allows you to work in South Africa. That includes helping at a relative’s shop till or “short-term support” on a construction site. The Chinese Embassy warns that South Africa stepped up enforcement against illegal entry, residence and employment in 2026, with penalties including fines, imprisonment, deportation and entry bans. If you need to work, get a work visa first. For meetings and trade fairs, see business visas and business visits.
Common mistakes
- Believing that South Africa is visa-free for Chinese citizens and being refused at check-in in China.
- Arriving with an ETA at a port where the system is not yet active.
- Overstaying, even by a few days. You can be declared “undesirable” and banned from entering for a period.
- Using an ETA to work or run a shop long-term, which can damage every future visa application.
FAQ
Is the ETA compulsory for Chinese passports?
Chinese passport holders must have either a visa or an ETA. Home Affairs says the ETA will progressively become the main route for short visits by visa-required nationals. As of October 2026, applying for a traditional visitor visa through a visa centre is still possible. Check the official portal before you travel.
Is the ETA single or multiple entry, and how long is it valid?
Some applicants report receiving multiple-entry authorisations valid for about one year, but Home Affairs has not published a standard validity period. Go by the authorisation you receive.
Is there a visa fee on top of the R500?
The fee regulations list R500 as the ETA electronic processing fee. Media reports say visa-required nationals may also pay the R425 visitor visa fee, R925 in total. The payment page shows the actual amount.
Does this apply to Hong Kong or Macao SAR passports or Taiwan documents?
No. This guide covers ordinary mainland Chinese passports only. Other documents follow different entry rules; check Home Affairs or the embassy and consulates.
