Every casino in South Africa is a provincially licensed land-based venue, and most are resorts with hotels, restaurants, cinemas and family entertainment. The three big groups are Tsogo Sun, Sun International and Peermont. Johannesburg has the highest concentration (Montecasino, Gold Reef City, Emperors Palace and more), Cape Town has GrandWest, Durban has Suncoast and Sibaya, and the famous Sun City is in North West. You must be 18 and carry your passport. Online casinos are illegal in South Africa; legal casino gambling happens only in these venues.

The ones Chinese residents visit most

  • Montecasino (Fourways, northern Johannesburg): Tuscan-village design with restaurants, theatres and cinemas indoors, close to Sandton and Midrand.
  • Gold Reef City (southern Johannesburg): next to the theme park of the same name and the Apartheid Museum, good with family.
  • Emperors Palace (next to OR Tambo airport): several hotels, handy for flights and airport pick-ups.
  • Time Square (Menlyn Maine, Pretoria): the most popular with Pretoria’s Chinese community, next to the Menlyn shopping area.
  • Sun City (North West): a resort roughly 2–3 hours’ drive from Johannesburg with a water park and golf, beside Pilanesberg National Park for game viewing.
  • GrandWest (Cape Town), Suncoast (Durban beachfront), Sibaya (Umhlanga): the main coastal casino resorts.

On the way to Kruger National Park, Mbombela has the Emnotweni casino; see our Kruger self-drive guide.

Before you go in

  • Age: 18+. Carry your original passport; copies or phone photos may be refused.
  • ID and anti-money-laundering: for large chip purchases or big payouts, casinos record your identity under FICA and may ask for proof of address.
  • Smoking: casinos usually have designated smoking areas; elsewhere is non-smoking.
  • Dress: most casinos have no strict dress code, though private gaming rooms may.
  • Payment: South African bank cards are widely accepted; check on site whether foreign or UnionPay cards work.

Safety

  • Do not count winnings on the floor or post them on WeChat Moments, and watch for anyone following you out. Following people home from casinos is a known robbery method in South Africa.
  • Use the casino’s own parking and avoid driving home with large amounts of cash; ask for a cheque or transfer.

Responsible gambling

Treat gambling as entertainment: set a budget and time limit, never borrow to gamble and never chase losses. You can self-exclude at any casino (minimum six months). The National Responsible Gambling Programme helpline is 0800 006 008 (toll-free, free counselling). See responsible gambling, the legal rules in South African gambling laws, and the gambling section.

FAQ

Yes. You need to be 18 or older with your original passport; South African residence is not required.

Are there legal online casinos in South Africa?

No. Online casino games are prohibited, as the NGB restated on 27 February 2026. Ignore websites and apps presenting themselves as “South African online casinos”.

How do I check that a casino is licensed?

Search the NGB’s Verified Operators list by name, or check the provincial regulator’s website.

How far is Sun City from Johannesburg?

Usually about 2–3 hours by car, depending on where you start and traffic; it works well as a weekend trip.
