South Africa’s remote work visa (often called the digital nomad visa) is for people employed by a foreign employer who work remotely while living in South Africa. In force since 9 October 2024, it allows stays of more than three months and up to three years. You need a gross annual income of at least R650,796 (roughly RMB 260,000), shown with three months of bank statements. You may not work for a South African employer on this visa.

Who it suits
- Employees of Chinese or other foreign companies whose job can be done remotely, such as developers, designers, cross-border e-commerce operators and overseas sales staff;
- People who want to live in South Africa for a while, perhaps near family, while earning from a foreign employer;
- Applicants who meet the income threshold and have an employment contract signed by both them and the foreign employer.
It does not suit people who want to find a local job, work for a South African company or run a shop. They need a work visa or a business visa. If you are only visiting for up to 90 days and answering work emails, an ETA or tourist visa is enough.
Income threshold: R650,796, not R1 million
Many articles still say you need R1 million a year, which was the figure discussed at the draft stage in 2024. The Home Affairs checklist in force from 9 October 2024 requires a gross salary of no less than R650,796 a year, shown through three months of bank statements. At exchange rates around October 2026 that is roughly RMB 260,000 a year, or about RMB 22,000 a month. Exchange rates move, so leave a margin.
Note that the points-system notice for general work visas uses R650,976, R180 more than the remote work checklist. Follow the visa centre’s current checklist when you apply.
The official checklist
- Completed and signed application form;
- A statement or document explaining the purpose and length of the visit;
- A valid return air ticket or proof of reservation;
- Proof of funds: three months of bank statements showing a gross salary of at least R650,796 a year;
- Passport valid for at least 30 days after your intended departure from South Africa;
- Yellow fever vaccination certificate if you have travelled or will travel through a yellow fever area;
- A valid employment contract signed by you and the foreign employer;
- Proof of payment of the fee.
Tips for Chinese applicants: attach English translations of Chinese bank statements and contracts, and add an English employment and income letter. If your salary is paid in USD or RMB, the statements should clearly show the amount and the payer. VFS also asks Beijing-district applicants to provide notarised or certified documents as an original plus one copy.
Where to apply, fees and timing
Apply in China through the 11 South African visa application centres (Beijing district: Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Kunming, Shenyang, Wuhan, Xi’an; Shanghai district: Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Jinan). The remote work visa is a type of visitor visa, and as of October 2026 the government visitor visa fee is R425. The VFS China page lists a visa fee of RMB 172 and a service fee of RMB 343; pay what applies on the day. VFS says processing times for remote work visas vary case by case, with no fixed period, so start preparing at least two to three months ahead.
Tax: watch the 183-day mark
The Home Affairs checklist includes specific tax notes:
- If you are tax resident in a country that has a double taxation agreement with South Africa (China has one), you must register with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) if you spend more than 183 days in total in South Africa in any 12-month period;
- If your country has no such agreement, you must register with SARS.
Registering does not automatically mean paying more tax in South Africa; that depends on the agreement and your circumstances. Your Chinese tax residence matters too. See South African income tax and tax residence.
Restrictions while on the visa
- You may not take up employment in South Africa or provide local services to South African clients;
- As a rule you cannot change to another visa while in South Africa, except in the exceptional circumstances allowed for visitor visas;
- Leave or renew lawfully before the visa expires.
FAQ
Can freelancers apply?
The checklist requires an employment contract signed with a foreign employer. There is no clear rule on freelancers, so confirm with the visa centre before you apply.
Can my family come too?
Family members need their own visas. A family member who does not meet the income threshold cannot get a remote work visa on their own; follow the visa centre’s checklist.
Can a remote work visa lead to permanent residence?
The remote work visa is a visitor visa, not a work visa, so time on it generally does not count toward the five years on a work visa needed for permanent residence. See permanent residence and the visa section.
