According to AeroRoutes, Air China’s Beijing–Shenzhen–Johannesburg route (CA867/868) increases from three to five flights a week from 25 October 2026, the start of the northern winter season. That gives more choice for trips home and back. Also remember that since 1 July 2026 everyone entering or leaving South Africa must complete an online traveller declaration with SARS before travelling.

What changes

  • Route: Beijing Capital – Shenzhen – Johannesburg O.R. Tambo, with a stop in Shenzhen.
  • Frequency: from three to five weekly flights from 25 October (AeroRoutes, 22 July 2026).
  • Aircraft: reported to be an Airbus A350.

As of October 2026 this is the main direct service from mainland China to South Africa; other options usually connect via Hong Kong, the Middle East or Addis Ababa. If you connect elsewhere on a Chinese passport, check the transit visa rules for that airport in advance. Check operating days, times and fares on Air China’s website or app, as schedules can change during the season.

Before you fly: the SARS traveller declaration

Since 1 July 2026, all travellers entering or leaving South Africa must complete an online traveller declaration on the SARS website or app before they travel. The Chinese Embassy, in a notice on 6 July, advises doing it within 24 hours before departure. Key points:

  • Every traveller must declare, including when leaving South Africa.
  • Declare cash, valuables and goods truthfully. Traders should not carry undeclared samples or large amounts of cash.
  • Use only the official SARS website or app, and ignore links offering to fill it in for a fee.

After you land in Johannesburg

The Gautrain runs from O.R. Tambo to Sandton and Pretoria, and ride-hailing is widely used. See getting around South Africa for airport transfers, and the Johannesburg city page for local information.
